Caring for people with dementia during COVID-19 restrictions

Wed, Jul 22 (1:00pm - 2:00pm)

Description

COVID-19 is a difficult time for us all – and it can be especially difficult for people living with dementia.

Restrictions to keep people safe from COVID-19, or to stop COVID-19 from spreading, can result in significant changes in the life of someone living with dementia, particularly within aged care facilities. Many of these changes can be extremely distressing and lead to changes in the way a person with dementia responds or even affect their cognition. This in turn, can present challenges for those caring for an individual with dementia.

No matter what the circumstances are, the rights of older people must be upheld, and we need to work together to make sure this happens while keeping everyone safe from the impacts of COVID-19.

During this webinar, our panel of experts will talk about how to balance safety measures with person-centred care, and how this can be done within the context of COVID-19 restrictions.

On the panel will be:

  • Craig Gear | CEO OPAN
  • Maree McCabe | CEO Dementia Australia
  • Dr Melanie Wroth | Senior Staff Specialist in Geriatric Medicine at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Chief Clinical Advisor at the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission
  • Wendy Henderson | Consultant |Centre for Dementia Learning at Dementia Australia

We encourage people working in aged care to watch this webinar to learn more about caring for older people with dementia during COVID-19 restrictions. We also encourage older people, their families and friends to watch and see how they can support their loved ones during this time.
